This pack is one of Etiquette's royal court photoshoot series — the courts of Europe, 1450–1935 — set around Alexander II and Katia: the Tsar Liberator and his morganatic princess in the 1870s, the emancipation behind him, the Winter Palace's private rooms and Crimean Livadia around him. The value is the tsar's dress in the rooms where he was a man rather than an emperor.

Photographically the register is soft private-room light: a dark green uniform coat with gold and the Saint Andrew ribbon, side-whiskers and a moustache, or a plain dark frock coat for Livadia, a grey greatcoat, a cane. The palette runs green, gold, grey, Crimean blue, and lilac.
