The Balenciaga register

Getaria is the Basque fishing village where the founder of the house was born, a stone harbour under a headland shaped like a whale, white and ochre houses, nets, the Bay of Biscay in grey-green. In 1957 he cut the sack dress there in spirit if not in fact: a straight fall from the shoulder that frees the waist entirely. The pack puts you in that ivory wool, with ivory gloves, in every value from sea-foam white to the warm cream of the harbour stone.

You stand before the warm stone wall with a gloved hand at the collarbone, rest a hand on a stone bollard on the quay with the wool falling unbroken to the hip, and stand at the quay's edge at full length with moored boats and the headland behind you.
