The sunken palace of Istanbul register

Under the old city of Istanbul lies a Byzantine cistern, a forest of three hundred marble columns standing in shallow water under brick vaults, lit low and warm so the columns glow amber and double in the water. The pack puts the curator there, in every value of amber from warm gold on marble to deep brown shadow, in an amber silk blouse under a dark bronze wool coat.

She stands before a lit column with the endless rows receding soft behind her, on the raised walkway with one hand on its dark rail and the columns doubled in the still water below, and at the walkway's centre at half-length with the whole forest of columns receding under the brick vaults. The light is low and warm from one side, with a sheen on the cheekbone. The mood is a woman dressed in the colour the cistern glows.
