This pack draws on the Mamluk-sultan register — a hard face with a short beard, a tall turban wound around a red cap, a lamellar cuirass with the lion blazon on a roundel over a silk kaftan, a mace and curved sword, gold-embroidered horse trappings. The palette runs Mamluk red and gold, the lion blazon, sand, Cairo stone, and steel — the vocabulary of the sultan who broke the Mongols at Ain Jalut and ruled Cairo as its most feared power.

Three situations carry the register: mounted in lamellar armor with the lion roundel raised at Ain Jalut, dust and Mongol tents beyond a dry riverbed; riding through Cairo's twin-towered gate in a gold-embroidered kaftan to drums and crowds; on a polo ground at dusk, mallet across the saddle, the citadel on its hill.
