The San Ildefonso register
San Ildefonso Pueblo is where Maria Martinez's black-on-black ware was made: matte feather designs on mirror-gloss black. This pack dresses you in the pottery's own black and puts the finished ware in your hands, as the treasure it is.
Three settings carry it. An adobe gallery room with shelves of black-on-black ware behind you, a black wool manta dress pinned at one shoulder with a woven sash, a large gloss-black olla at the hip. The pueblo plaza at golden hour under Black Mesa, cottonwood shade on adobe, a black feather-design plate held at chest height with the sky caught small in its gloss. The cooled firing ground at dusk, embers dying orange in the ash, a black jar held in both hands and lit from below.
The palette is black, matte and gloss, on warm adobe held to values, with one turquoise pendant as the accent. The feather design is read in sheen, not in colour.
The result is photographic: nine photos of you, three in each setting, with the face to the lens. It draws on the documented pottery tradition of San Ildefonso as a respectful setting, without depicting any named person, and it is not a generic native american costume backdrop.
