The Bologna terracotta register
Bologna is the red city of porticoes, its arcades running for kilometres over pavements, its walls washed in terracotta and lime. The brick of the two towers rises above the streets, and the vaults under the arcades hold a shadowed red. The terracotta of this pack is that wash and that brick, and a portrait in that colour reads as a clinician dressed in the colour of her city's walls.
Photographically this is terracotta on terracotta: one warm red for garment and ground, separated by linen texture and the bounced shade of the arcade rather than by contrast. The tunic is a collarless terracotta linen over cream, and the face is the only other colour.
