This pack is one of Icônes' documented-shoot series — fashion icons and the photographs that made them — the Camus pack draws on Henri Cartier-Bresson's Paris of 1944, Loomis Dean's 1957 Life pictures at Gallimard in the Nobel autumn, and the Algiers shore of the thirties where the young man swam. The value is the handsomest face in French letters, in the photograph everyone owns and the two it stands between.

Photographically the register is Magnum's Leica grammar — flat Paris overcast and hard Mediterranean noon — carrying a belted gabardine trench coat, a tweed jacket and knitted tie, and dark bathing trunks in turn; the palette runs trench beige, Paris grey, and Algiers sea blue.
