The Sandstone Wilderness register

The Cederberg, in South Africa, is a wilderness of orange sandstone sculpted by wind into arches and crosses, with rock paintings in the overhangs and rooibos farms in the valleys. The pack puts the geologist there. Ochre runs through every value from pale orange to deep rust shadow, and an ochre waxed jacket over a tan knit sits in it.

He stands before a wall of orange sandstone, rests one hand on the warm stone at the arch's base with the valley soft beyond, and stands on the rock platform as the arch rises behind him with sculpted rocks beyond. The hard clear light is softened, from one side, with a specular on the brow.
