The look of the pack

Under the highest mountain in the Alps, the valley of Chamonix is a place of granite needles grey against the snow, a little red rack railway climbing to the glacier, and a hospital serving climbers brought down from the ice, in air that is thin and clear. The pack holds the granite, the snow and the sky to values and lets one hue stand out: the railway's red, worn as a red wool coat and echoed once in the little train on the mountainside. She wears a grey knit beneath it.

The light is hard, clear alpine light from one side, the shadow side cool.
