The The Clay Hall register

In the clay hall of a Detroit design centre, the next car is sculpted at full size in warm industrial clay under long skylights. The designer's portrait is taken beside the car, never at the scraping: a person who has finished a decision and is looking at it.

Three photographs. Against the clay car's flank, its scraped surface and a taped character line soft behind you, in a suede jacket over a knit. With a forearm on the clay roofline and a steel rake lying untouched on the roof. And at half-length at the nose of the nearer of two clay cars, the whole hall tan, clay or suede.

The palette is design clay, a warm tan-brown, and the daylight rakes across it so that the sheen of the clay and the warmth of the face share one colour. Texture does the separating: the clay's matte scrape, the suede's nap and the skylight's rake.
