The Desert Black register
In April 2023 a Punjabi singer walked onto the main stage of a Californian desert festival in a black kurta, a black embroidered waistcoat and a black turban, and became the first of his kind to stand there. The pack borrows that dusk. It keeps to black in every value, from the charcoal of the sky to the matte of the cotton, and lets the embroidery and the turban cloth do the separating.
Three settings: a close portrait against the violet dusk with the turban frame, the dark glasses and the embroidered collar; a half-length with one hand on the waistcoat edge and the kurta sleeve at the cuff; and the festival view, palms, dust and the lights of a Ferris wheel far off under a gold-violet sky.
