The Schist Terraces register

In the valley of the Douro in northern Portugal the vineyards for the fortified wine climb the gorge in terraces walled with grey-brown schist, with the river a green ribbon far below, white estate houses on the slopes, and the rock splitting into flat plates underfoot.
