The El Cid register
Rodrigo Díaz de Vivar — El Cid: the oath at Santa Gadea, exile's long road, the sword Tizona at his hip, Valencia won at the end of it. This is a named hero's story, carried lightly rather than announced. Mail and iron coif thrown back, the sword with a name's worth of presence, a travel cloak for the exile years, later scenes in Valencia's won splendor. The register is epic-Castilian, palette of iron, Burgos stone, exile dust, Valencia gold.
