The Second Canyon register

The Fish River Canyon, in the desert of southern Namibia, is the second largest canyon on earth: layered rock walls five hundred metres deep in grey and ochre, a river winding green at the bottom and quiver trees on the rim. The pack puts the geologist there. Grey-ochre runs through every value from pale rim to deep shadowed wall, and a grey-ochre waxed jacket over a tan knit sits in it.

She stands before a wall of layered rock, rests one hand on the smooth bark of a quiver tree on the rim with the canyon soft below, and stands on the rim's stone as the walls drop behind her to the river's winding line. The hard clear light is softened, from one side, with a catchlight in each eye.
