Kyoto Machiya Indigo draws on Kyoto in January: a machiya townhouse with indigo noren at the door, dark lattice, a dusting of snow on the tiled eave, an indigo wool coat cut like a haori for the woman who runs the family business into its fifth century.

Photographically the license is aizome as a business colour: indigo wool against indigo-dyed noren against dark cedar lattice, the deepest blue Japan makes, worn with total restraint. Three settings carry the pack -- before the machiya's entrance with the noren and lattice behind, a tight headshot against the noren's indigo cloth, and stepping through the noren into a snow-dusted courtyard -- chest-up and headshot throughout.
