The Makgadikgadi pans are salt flats the size of a country: white crust to the horizon with no feature at all, a few giant baobabs on an island of granite, meerkats at their burrows, and a hard white light that erases the horizon. The pack puts the geologist there in a white linen suit over a pale grey shirt, white in every value from blinding crust to pale grey sky.

He stands before a wall of grey granite, soft behind him, the light softened from one side with a catchlight in each eye.
