The White City register

The peninsula's white city has a boulevard of French-style mansions in cream and white stucco, built on sisal money. Laurel trees shade it, iron gates close the gardens, a cathedral of pale limestone stands nearby, and the hot, flat light bleaches everything toward cream. The pack puts the lawyer on that boulevard.

He wears a cream linen suit over a white shirt, and the cream holds in every value from pure white to warm shadow.
