This pack is one of Icônes' documented-shoot series — fashion icons and the photographs that made them — the Montgomery Clift pack draws on George Stevens's A Place in the Sun, shot at Paramount and on Lake Tahoe in 1950, and the winter of 1949 when a young Stanley Kubrick, then a Look staff photographer, followed Clift through his Manhattan brownstone. The value is the first of the beautiful wounded moderns, in the three rooms that recorded him.

Photographically the register is late-forties Hollywood — the Paramount portrait gallery's hard 8×10 silver against Kubrick's available-light 35mm Tri-X.
