Odesa is a Black Sea port built of pale shell limestone: a boulevard of plane trees along the cliff above the harbour, a great stair of two hundred steps falling from it to the port, the opera house and the merchants' palaces all in the same pale stone, and the sea grey-green beyond the cranes.
