The Route to the Sea register

Ouidah, on the coast of Benin, has a sandy route lined with monuments that runs four kilometres to the ocean, a Portuguese fort of ochre stucco, a sacred forest and a gate on the beach. The pack puts the historian on that road. Ochre runs through every value from pale sand to deep earth, and an ochre linen suit over a sand silk blouse sits inside it.

She stands before the fort's ochre wall, rests one hand on the jamb of its doorway, and walks the route with the sea's haze at the far end between coconut palms. The light is warm and humid, from one side, with a catchlight in each eye. The portrait is composed to the earth and its weight, never to spectacle.
