The Pera Palace register

The Pera Palace in Istanbul was built in 1892 for the passengers of the Orient Express. Its bar is green velvet and brass, its lift is cast iron, its floors marble. The pack dresses a man in a green velvet jacket cut from the same cloth as the bar, so he reads as a regular of the room.

Head and shoulders against green velvet in warm light, chest-up at the brass rail of the bar, half-length beside the iron lift. Velvet, brass, marble and glow are separated by pile and shine, and green is the only colour the eye is asked to hold.
