Qawwali at Nizamuddin

Nine photos of you in one setting

How your model is created from your photos

Every pack on Narcis, made with your face

Nine photographs of you in one setting: one pack of the Narcis catalogue.

Nine photographs of you, styled for Delhi's Sufi evening — a white kurta-pyjama with a waistcoat and cap, seated cross-legged at a harmonium before a marble lattice, in a flower-seller's lane, and against a plain dark backdrop, in portrait format. The nine vary in crop, expression and light, so there are real choices, not nine identical files.

The qawwali register

Qawwali is devotional music with a very specific shape, and this pack borrows the shape rather than inventing one. The qawwals sit cross-legged on the ground in a row, harmonium and tabla in front, the chorus clapping the beat behind; the form is sung at Sufi shrines and has been sung at Hazrat Nizamuddin's dargah in Delhi for something close to seven centuries, its lineage running back to Amir Khusrau. Thursday evening is when the courtyard fills. The dress is plain and exact: a white kurta-pyjama, a waistcoat over it, a cap. The palette runs kurta white, marble, rose-petal red and lamp gold — warm rather than grand, because a dargah courtyard at dusk is lit low and from the side. The register is devotional and generous rather than performed. A hand goes up mid-verse because the line calls for it, not because a camera is watching. Incense sits in the air, rose petals cover the ground near the tomb, and the crowd claps the beat from every side — a dargah courtyard photo has to feel crowded and warm to be true to it.

Three situations carry it. The courtyard — seated cross-legged at the harmonium with the marble lattice behind, one hand raised mid-verse, warm evening light across the face. The lane — standing in the dargah's approach with the flower sellers' baskets of roses behind, cap on, calm. The portrait — a plain dark backdrop, the harmonium's keys under one hand, eyes lifted. Nine images across those three, three per scene. The output is photoreal: a real-looking nizamuddin dargah photo of you in the white kurta, a photograph rather than a painting or an illustration. The pack borrows the tradition's dress, posture and light and holds them accurately; the courtyard and the lane are composed in that register, not photographed at the shrine itself. The seated frames keep the harmonium in the lower third where the hands work, and the light stays low and side-on, the way a courtyard is lit once the sun has gone.

How to photograph yourself for a qawwali photoshoot

Better source photos make better portraits.

  1. Even, soft lightStand near a window with indirect daylight. Avoid overhead bulbs and flash — the pack brings its own warm dusk light.
  2. Front or three-quarter angleEye level, facing forward or turned slightly. No selfie-stick uplook.
  3. Face fully clearHair off the forehead, no sunglasses. A clear face gives the most to match under the cap.
  4. An open, lifted expressionThis register is devotional and warm — eyes lifted, mouth open mid-line, absorbed rather than posed. A relaxed, unguarded face suits the courtyard best.
  5. Plain background is fineThe marble lattice, the flower lane and the dark backdrop replace whatever is behind you — a plain wall just helps the focus land on your face.

Frequently asked questions

Will it actually look like a real qawwali photoshoot?
Yes. The output is photoreal — a real-looking photograph of you in a white kurta and cap at the harmonium, in the flower lane, or against a dark backdrop. Not a painting, not a cartoon.
Which scenes does the pack cover?
Three: the dargah courtyard at dusk with the harmonium and the marble lattice behind, the lane with the flower sellers' rose baskets, and a plain dark backdrop with the keys under one hand. Nine portraits, three per scene.
Is this respectful of the tradition?
That is the intent, and the detail is held accurately rather than as costume: the seated posture, the harmonium, the white kurta and cap, the roses and incense are what a Thursday at the shrine actually looks like. The pack styles you in that register — it does not stage a religious ceremony, and it makes no claim about your faith or your standing in the tradition.
Is this a photo of the actual dargah at Nizamuddin?
No. The courtyard and the lane are composed in the register — marble, lattice, rose petals, lamp gold — not photographed at the shrine. It reads as Nizamuddin because the light, the dress and the setting do.
Do I need to sing or play the harmonium?
No. The instrument belongs to the register the way the kurta does; these are styled portraits, not a claim that you perform. If you do, the dark-backdrop frames double as a musician's portrait.
Can women use this pack?
The dress renders as a male sitter by default — the kurta-pyjama, waistcoat and cap of the qawwali party. Other packs in the catalogue cover feminine South Asian registers.
Can I use it commercially?
It's for personal use — profile pictures, prints, gifts — not licensed stock photography for resale or ad campaigns.
Will the photos look like me?
Every photo looks like you, well photographed. If one is nearly right, say what to change, in your own words.
Do I have to write a prompt?
No. There is nothing to write: you pick a pack, and it is ready in seconds.
How many photos of myself do I add?
Between six and twenty, from different days and in different light, with your face clear. We check each one when you add it.
What happens to the photos I add?
They are used only to create your model, on our own servers in the European Union. They are not shared and not sold.
