The Rachel register

This pack draws on Rachel at the Comédie-Française, 1838 to 1855 — the pedlar's daughter who made Racine burn again, Phèdre in a white peplos, the tragédienne whose severity was lit like beauty.

Photographically the register is warm gaslight from below on painted columns, cool daylight at the salon fireplace, and hot stage light for the Marseillaise. The palette is white wool, Pompeian red, gaslight gold and column grey.

Three scenes carry the pack: the peplos and red mantle before painted columns, the black silk salon dress at a fireplace with a bust of Racine, and the peplos with a tricolour clutched to the breast. Each is a genuine facet of the tragédienne, not one costume in three rooms.
