The Volcano Island register

Reunion holds one of the most active volcanoes on earth, a plain of black lava and red ash around its cone, and on the other side green cirques of cloud forest and waterfalls three thousand metres deep. The pack dresses the volcanologist in the two colours her island is split between: a black technical coat over a deep green knit, the black carrying the weight on the plain and the green the depth in the cirques.

She stands before a wall of black lava rock, rests a hand on a rough outcrop on the plain with the cone soft behind, and then stands on a rock at the rim for a half-length view, the black plain and cone behind her and the green cirque falling away on the other side. The light is clear, from one side, with a catchlight in each eye.
