The Black Beach register

Reynisfjara is a black volcanic beach on Iceland's south coast. Hexagonal basalt columns stand stacked like organ pipes in the cliff, black sea stacks rise from white surf, and the sky is the colour of pewter. The pack dresses the volcanologist in every value of black, from matte charcoal to wet jet: a black wool overcoat over a black knit, with the surf as the only white.

He stands before the basalt columns with their hexagonal ends soft behind him and a rim of light on his hair, rests one hand on the flat face of a fallen column with the surf white behind, and stands on the wet black sand at half-length with the sea stacks in the surf and the column cliff to one side.
