The Sigiriya register

Sigiriya is a column of ochre rock two hundred metres high, rising from the jungle plain with the ruins of a royal palace on its summit. Below it lie water gardens laid out in brick and stone, and on the rock face a gallery of frescoed maidens. The pack sets the archaeologist at its foot, in the colours of the stone.

She wears an ochre linen suit over a sand silk blouse, in every value from pale sand to deep rust. One photograph stands before a wall of weathered rock, one at the edge of the water gardens with a hand on a warm brick block and a still pool behind, one on the ancient brick path with the rock rising sheer from the jungle beyond.
