The Red Dunes register

Sossusvlei has the tallest dunes on earth in red-orange sand, and between them a white clay pan where dead black camelthorn trees have stood for nine hundred years, their shadows knife-sharp under a hard clear light. The pack dresses the geologist in the two colours of that picture, a rust-red linen jacket over a white shirt, with the red dominant, as it is in the dunes.

She stands before a wall of red-orange sand, the hard light softened from one side, rests a hand on a dead camelthorn's black trunk with white clay soft below and the red dune soft behind, and stands at half-length on the cracked white clay with the dead trees behind her against the red dune wall. The sharp crests of the dunes and the black silhouettes of the trees give the line; linen, cotton, sand and clay do the separating.
