The Canal Forest register
The Spreewald is a forest of canals south of Berlin. In May the alders are in new leaf over black water, wooden bridges cross the channels, and a punt moves under the branches. The pack puts a man in the same green: a green cotton shirt, matched to the leaf and to the water that holds the leaf's reflection, with the grey of old timber kept low as the quiet note.
He stands head and shoulders under young alder with the green soft behind him, leans chest-up on the wooden bridge with the water dark below, and stands at the bank in half-length as the canal recedes into more green. The light is filtered through leaf, soft and without hard shadow.
