The Bamboo Grove register

On the western edge of Kyoto stands a grove of giant bamboo, stems as thick as an arm rising thirty metres in green columns, with a path between low bamboo fences. The canopy closes overhead, so the light comes down green and the stems creak in the wind. At the grove's edge sits an inn of dark wood and paper. The pack puts the inn's owner in the grove, dressed in the green of a forest that grows a metre a day.

He stands before a wall of green stems with soft green light from above and one side, rests a hand on the tied rail of a low bamboo fence, and stops where the path bends under the closing canopy. Bamboo green runs from pale new stem to deep canopy, and wool, cotton, polished stem and split-bamboo fence keep the values apart.

What comes out is photographic: nine photos of you, three in each of three settings, in the look of an Arashiyama bamboo grove. The grove and the wardrobe are borrowed as a setting; the photos are portraits of you, not pictures taken there.
