The Lattice House register

Kyoto keeps streets of merchant townhouses two centuries old: narrow fronts of dark burnished timber, fine wooden lattices over every window, clay walls the colour of ash and a deep eave over each door. Inside, a long corridor of polished dark boards opens on a small inner garden. The pack puts the hotelier at home in that street, dressed in the dark wood his house has been polished to.

He stands before a wall of fine lattice with the shaded light soft on one side of his face, rests a hand on a timber post in the long corridor with the garden a green glow at its end, and pauses at his own doorway's step while the row of fronts recedes under its eaves.
