This pack draws on the great tournament-pageant of June 1662 before the Tuileries — five quadrilles in fantastic costume, the young king dressed as a Roman emperor with the sun for his device, the origin of the name Sun King itself. A costume of silver and gold brocade with a short pleated skirt of embroidered lappets, a moulded gilt cuirass with the sun on the breast, a plumed helmet with tall red and white feathers, a crimson cloak, and gilt boots.

Three moments carry it: mounted on a white horse in gilt trappings with the Tuileries facade behind, standing beside the horse with the helmet in the crook of one arm, and a tent at the arena's edge as a page adjusts a gilt greave.
