Mariacka Street in Gdańsk has sold amber under its gargoyled terraces for centuries — workshops with polishing wheels running behind the windows, trays of stone sorted by shade from honey to cognac to butterscotch, the Stogi beach nearby where fresh amber still washes up in the kelp after a winter storm. It is Poland's own resin, worked in one street since the Hanseatic League.
