This pack draws on Murasaki Shikibu's Heian court, around the year 1000 — the Shining Prince in layered silks, the moon-viewing veranda, cherry blossom at the Rokujo mansion, a poem passed on a folded fan. The value is the world's first novel, staged at its three documented scenes.

Photographically the register is silver moonlight for the veranda, soft pink daylight for the blossom, warm dim lamplight for the screen; the palette runs plum, white, pale green, blossom pink, lacquer black.

Three takes carry the pack: seated in layered plum and white silk on a raw-wood veranda under a full moon, a pale blue hunting robe under a cherry tree in full flower, and layered silks behind a half-raised bamboo blind by lamplight — three real scenes from the novel, not one robe in three rooms.
