This pack is one of Etiquette's royal court photoshoot series — the Hanoverian court of the 1730s and 1740s, the reign that gave Handel his living and put a barge of musicians on the Thames. It's Kneller-to-Hogarth light: a king who was correct in the Cupola Room and furious on the battlefield at Dettingen, the last British king to lead troops himself.

Photographically the register is early Georgian court dress — a coat of crimson or blue velvet with wide cuffs and gold lace over a long embroidered waistcoat, a lace cravat, a full powdered wig, the Garter star and ribbon, or a general's scarlet coat with a cuirass and a yellow Hanoverian sash. The palette runs crimson, gold, white, Thames grey, and powder.

Three scenes carry the pack: the crimson-awninged royal barge on the Thames with a second barge of musicians blurred alongside; the Cupola Room at Kensington under Kent's painted dome, stiff and correct; the field at Dettingen in powder smoke, sword drawn, wig askew.
