The register is late-Saxon and heavy, human rather than heroic-shiny: knee-length mail, a conical helm with a nasal, a round or kite shield, the long dane axe carried like a tool by a man who has used it. Three situations carry it. The shield wall: standing in the front rank on a ridge line, shields lapped either side of him, axe grounded, grey morning light down the slope. The banner: beneath a dragon standard on the hilltop, wind pulling it out straight, axe over one shoulder, watching the horizon.
