The clibanarii were late Rome's heavy horse — the fourth century's answer to the armored horsemen of the east. A gilded two-part ridge helmet with a garnet-set brow, full scale armor, an oval shield carrying a chi-rho or unit blazon, the windsock draco standard hissing overhead. The register is late-imperial, austere and windswept, palette of gilt, iron scale, storm sky, river grey.

Three situations carry it. The fortress gate: riding out under a squat stone gate tower on a northern river frontier, mist on the water, the draco lifting in the wind. The muster: standing dismounted before a rank of shields, the helm's face-guard up, holding the draco's staff under overcast even light on scale. The bridge: halted mid-span on a stone bridge at dusk, horse armored to the knee, torchlight from the far bank striking gold off the ridge helm.
