This pack borrows its register from a Calais lace house's showroom: lace is the material that is half absence — ivory thread and the air between it, so the colour of a lace dress is the colour of what is behind it. The wardrobe is ivory lace from collar to hem — a Leavers lace gown over a slip, a blouse with a midi skirt, a shirt dress — against pinned lace on the walls and lace at the windows, so the picture reads as one ivory at every depth with the face its only other colour.

Photographically the separation is ton sur ton: garment and ground share the hue, and texture, specular highlight, and the direction of light carry it instead — cool north light raises a gown's pattern in soft relief against pinned lace's flat wall, side light shines through a curtain's mesh and lands on a blouse's denser motif, low warm backlight glows through both a hung rail's lace and a sleeve's lace at once. One pearl is the only hard point.
