The value is the most photographed orator of the civil-rights decade, in three documented registers — the street, the hajj, and the debate hall.

Photographically the register is sixties Tri-X reportage — hard Manhattan noon, a desert-white Meccan sun, and warm English gaslight carrying a charcoal suit, a tan overcoat and snap-brim hat, and the pilgrim's ihram cloth in turn; the palette runs charcoal, hajj white, Harlem brick, and oak brown.
