This pack draws on the Merveilleuses of the Palais-Royal and Tivoli gardens, 1795 to 1799 — muslin dampened to cling like the antique statues it copied, a blonde wig one day and black the next, a silhouette built as a column.

Photographically the register is lantern gold on white at Tivoli, bright daylight on the promenade, and warm candlelight at the mirror. The palette is white muslin, spencer red, blonde, lantern gold and Tivoli green.

Three scenes carry the pack: the damp muslin and red spencer under strings of lanterns at Tivoli, the muslin and a shawl on the Champs-Élysées's gravel, and the damp muslin from behind at a cheval glass with a wig being pinned. Each is a genuine facet of the fashion, not one dress in three rooms.
