This pack draws on the horse-archer register — a fur-flapped hat or iron helmet, a lamellar cuirass of lacquered leather over a felt deel, two quivers, a composite recurve bow, a small tough horse. The palette runs lacquer brown, felt grey, eagle-feather brown, dust gold, and snow — the vocabulary of the rider whose skill on horseback and with a bow, more than any other single factor, built the Mongol conquest.
