The Mulan register
This pack draws on the Ballad of Mulan, Northern Wei China — the loom left for a father's conscription notice, armor bought at the four markets, twelve years of campaigns, the return to yellow flowers and a mirror. The value is one of the world's oldest recorded warrior-woman stories at its documented two-portrait structure.
Photographically the register is hard grey-gold light for the steppe, soft warm light for the mirror, one lamp for the loom; the palette runs lacquer black, cord red, peach silk, steppe ochre, yellow flower.
