Philippe le Bon founded the Order of the Golden Fleece and dressed his whole court in black on black — a long black velvet houppelande or a high-collared doublet, the gold collar of the Golden Fleece with its hanging ram, a black chaperon hood wound close on the head, and a jewelled dagger at the belt.
