The Rekha register
This pack is one of Icônes' documented-shoot series — fashion icons and the photographs that made them — the world beyond the West, anchored on the kanjeevaram and the sindoor — Umrao Jaan's Lucknow kotha of 1981, the Gautam Rajadhyaksha portrait sitting of the 1980s, a Bombay terrace — the most self-made beauty of Hindi cinema, in her three registers.
The register spans early-eighties Eastmancolor and Rajadhyaksha's transparency-film portrait: gold brocade with a heavy dupatta, a red-and-gold kanjeevaram silk sari, a chiffon sari on a terrace.
One frame seats her on a Persian carpet in a Lucknow kotha set, gold brocade and a gold-worked dupatta, warm lamp light. A second stands her against a plain dark ground in a red-and-gold kanjeevaram sari, the sindoor in her parting. A third leans her on a Bombay terrace rail at evening, the Arabian Sea behind her.
