The Sridevi register
This pack is one of Icônes' documented-shoot series — fashion icons and the photographs that made them — the world beyond the West, anchored on the Chandni white and the Mr India blue sari — the Switzerland meadow of Chandni in 1989 in white chiffon, the rain sequence of 1987 in a blue chiffon sari — the last great Hindi cinema goddess, in her two most copied looks.
The register spans late-eighties Eastmancolor and Manmohan Singh's Alpine light: a white chiffon sari glowing translucent in the sun, a blue chiffon sari soaked and clinging in artificial rain.
One frame runs her down an Alpine meadow toward the lens, the white chiffon sari's pallu flying, snow and wildflowers behind. A second stands her in falling stage rain, the blue chiffon sari soaked and clinging, face lifted into the water. A third stands her in a Madras temple courtyard in a gold-bordered silk sari, jasmine in her plaited hair.
