This pack draws on the Ayyubid-sultan register — a trimmed dark beard, a white turban over a small cap, a plain robe of dark blue or ochre with mail at the sleeves for war, a curved sword, a yellow silk overrobe for state. The palette runs Ayyubid yellow, white turban, sand, Jerusalem stone, and Cairo dusk — the vocabulary of the sultan whose austerity and generosity were admired on both sides of the Crusades.

Three situations carry the register: standing on the ramparts of Jerusalem with the yellow banner planted beside him, the Dome of the Rock gold below; seated on cushions in a stone iwan of the Cairo citadel with a falcon on a perch and scholars nearby; mounted at dawn before Hattin, no ornament, a hand raised to still the line.
