The Flat Mountain register

Table Mountain stands over Cape Town and two oceans, a flat crown of grey sandstone wearing a floral kingdom found nowhere else, with grey-green heath, proteas and a cable car climbing the face. When the cloud pours over the edge it looks like a tablecloth being shaken out. The pack puts the botanist there, in a grey waxed jacket over a grey-green knit, so that she is dressed in the stone and the heath around her.

She stands before a wall of weathered sandstone with the light coming from one side, rests a hand on a boulder among the heath with cloud soft beyond, and stands at half-length on the summit rock with the flat grey crown running behind her to the edge and the city far below.
