The Brigitte Lin register
This pack is one of Icônes' documented-shoot series — fashion icons and the photographs that made them — the world beyond the West, anchored on the blonde wig and the trench coat — Chungking Express in 1994, the Chungking Mansions escalators, the bar at night in dark glasses — Hong Kong's most enigmatic star at the end of her career, in the wig that hid her.
The register is Doyle's hand-held step-printed Hong Kong: a blonde wig with a beige trench coat and dark glasses under neon smear, a white shirt with the wig off under fluorescent green.
One frame rides her up the Mid-Levels escalator at night, neon signs streaking in step-printed motion, the blonde wig and trench coat. A second seats her at a crowded bar counter, a glass of whisky and a cigarette, the dark glasses never off. A third sits her on a cheap hotel bed, the blonde wig held in one hand, her own dark hair pushed back.
