The Setsuko Hara register
This pack is one of Icônes' documented-shoot series — fashion icons and the photographs that made them — the world beyond the West, anchored on Ozu's Kamakura — the kimono at the Noh performance of Late Spring in 1949, the tatami room at the family table, the train platform of the Tokyo Story years — Japanese cinema's most luminous smile, in the still frames of its master.
The register is Ozu and Atsuta's grammar: 50mm stillness at tatami height, a pale silk kimono with a patterned obi, a Western suit and small hat on a station platform.
