This pack belongs to the house's clair-obscur series: one named light source in the frame, the rest given over to black. The campfire photoshoot draws on firelight -- warm, moving, from below -- set on a High Sierra ridge at night, a ring of stones and a small fire the only source.

Photographically the register runs three genuine takes: crouched at the fire with the flames between him and the lens, in a waxed canvas jacket, the fire lighting the face from beneath while the trees behind go black; seated on a log with the fire to one side, in a wool blanket over flannel, the light on one cheek and the far half in dark; standing beyond the fire with the flames at his knees, in a down vest, the light thrown up under the brow while the sky stays black. No fill light, no second source -- separation comes from falloff alone.
