The candlelight photoshoot draws on the oldest portrait light there is -- warm, low, close -- set at a long oak table in a stone refectory, one candle in a brass stick the only illumination.

Photographically the register runs three genuine takes: seated at the table with the candle low and in front, its flame lighting the chin and folded hands while the room's far end vanishes into black; leaning on one elbow with the candle to one side, the light carving the face into a lit half and a dark half; standing at the table's end holding the candle up, the flame throwing light down over the brow while the floor and walls stay black. No fill light, no second source -- separation comes from falloff alone.

The output is photoreal -- a real-looking chiaroscuro photograph, not a painting, though it borrows its light discipline from the candlelit portraits of La Tour and his followers.
